The Use of Relics in Late Antique Divination

While Christian authors in Late Antiquity firmly condemned pagan divination of any kind, their attitude toward the Christian or Christianized forms was more complicated. They were hardly enthusiastic about such practices, but usually did not condemn them either. In effect they seldom wrote about them at all. That is why we don’t know much even about quite popular late antique divinatory practices. In this paper I am going to focus on the beginnings of such practices as incubation, book and lot divination, inquiring energumens and holy monks, with a focus on two questions, namely, What was the relation between relics and divination? and How deeply were Christian practicese rooted in pagan customs?
Robert Wiśniewski earned his PhD at the University of Warsaw in 2002 with a thesis on the role of the devil in early Latin hagiography. He works on late antique Christian religious mentality and practice, although his attention is sometimes attracted by Gallic druids. Robert is currently writing a book on the beginnings of the cult of relics and is involved in a project on Christian divination in Late Antiquity. He is perplexed by the question of how it was possible to be well informed about the future and remain a good Christian.

A Mundus magnus homo, homo parvus mundus gondolata, miszerint az ember egy kis világ, a világ pedig az emberi test analogikus párja, alapvetően áthatotta a középkor és kora újkor gondolkodásmódját, szellemiségét és viszonyulását a természethez, a teremtéshez és a világ egészéhez. A konferencia a világ rendjére való tudományos, laikus és művészi reflektálások különböző formáit kívánja bemutatni, választott korszaka a 12–18. század.
Konferenciánkkal – az elmúlt évek hagyományait folytatva – szeretnénk lehetőséget nyújtani egyetemi hallgatók és doktori fokozatot még nem szerzett fiatal kutatók számára a bemutatkozáshoz, szakmai közönség előtt való megszólaláshoz. Az elmúlt években az ország öt egyetemének számos tanszékéről és a határon túlról érkeztek előadók, a konferenciák anyaga pedig tanulmánykötetek formájában látott napvilágot.
A Pécsi Tudományegyetem meghívására konferenciánkat idén új helyszínen és új időpontban, Pécsett, 2012. áprilisában tartjuk. Az előadók számára szállást biztosítunk, utazási hozzájárulás az anyagi keretek erejéig igényelhető.
A konferencia helyszíne: Pécs, PTE BTK
A konferencia ideje: 2012. április 27–28., (péntek–szombat)
Javasolt témakörök:
1. Tudomány és mágia (Orvoslás, asztrológia, asztronómia; Babonaság, varázslás, népi orvoslás)
2. A világ rendje (A természet harmóniája; Hermetikus világkép; Arányok és arányosság; Valóság és művészet)
3. Az ember (Ember és társadalom; Ember és Isten)
Jelentkezni lehet bármilyen irodalom-, művészet- és kultúrtörténeti dolgozattal, amelynek témája kapcsolódik a fent vázolt témakörök valamelyikéhez. Az előadások nyelve elsősorban magyar, de a benyújtott tanulmányokat és prezentációkat angolul is elfogadjuk. A tervek szerint az egyes szekciók 3-4 előadást fognak tartalmazni, egy előadásra 15 perc jut, minden szekció végén 20 percig lesz vitára, hozzászólásra lehetőség.
